Woodwork/Joinery

Woodwork and Joinery training is conducted in groups and on a one to one basis and the skills gained are used in the production of a range of high quality products that are sold through a variety of outlets. Safety is always the first priority both in the training and practical work undertaken.

Staff and volunteers develop jigs and fixtures to support the production processes so that production can be carried out entirely by trainees. The tasks involved are selected according to the abilities of individuals with the goal of involving individuals in as many different aspects as is practical, with increased involvement as training continues.

Training courses currently offered include
Hand Sanding and Finishing covering sanding filling, staining and the use of three different finishes.

Light Sanding machines covering the use of six sanders with a practical project to finish

The Surface Planer covering facing and edging boards and square stock, jointing boards and planning bevels.

The Thicknesser covering machining boards to specific width and thickness measurements; both in batch work and one offs.

Bandsaw and jigsaw use, ensuring that students of all ages and genders can produce safe and accurate work.

The use of a table Saw, crosscut saw and router are covered along with hand veneering and construction of small items.

For the more experienced trainees tuition is available in Turning and Carving. This is currently approached as a separate subset of activities again with safety as a first principle.
